What is Cool Schools?

The Special Olympics Delaware Cool Schools challenge is a unique team-building activity that combines fun, courage, school spirit, and community service for a great cause.

Cool Schools is part of our Special Olympics school partnership to raise awareness for our athletes and help raise funds for Special Olympics school programs.  By taking the plunge and becoming a Polar Bear, students and schools can become active participants in helping to support the programs that benefit Special Olympics Delaware athletes.

The Polar Bear Plunge is Special Olympics Delaware's largest and most significant fundraiser of the year. Proceeds go directly to supporting the year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities who partcipate in Special Olympics Delaware. Each student has a minimum fundraising goal of $75 to participate as a Polar Bear and receive an official Plunge hoodie. Collect pledges in the months leading up to the Plunge, and use the resources in our Cool Schools toolkit (link above) to make it easy!  All donations are tax deductible.

Got school spirit? BRRRRING it on!

Have some fun and get creative ... pick a theme for your team and dress the part!  One of the best things about the Plunge is the fun of seeing all the unique and crazy costumes people come up with. Recruit lots of students, bring your school banner and mascot, encourage teachers and staff to join you - and show us your school spirit!

Pledge and Plunge

Cool Schools participants also help us to promote acceptance for thousands of Special Olympics athletes by "Pledging Respect" as we kick off the annual Spread the Word to End the Word campaign on the boardwalk. Spread the Word to End the Word is a Special Olympics initiative to encourage respectful language and stop the dereogatory use of the word "retard(ed)" in everyday speech. So take the pledge to "end the R-word", grab your friends, engage your fellow students, ignite your school spirit and Pledge and Plunge!

Thank you for helping us build a bigger, better and stronger community for more than 4,000 Special Olympics athletes in Delaware.
